We all remember the total chaos of the gymnastics team final in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Simone Biles, America’s sweetheart, was forced to withdraw mid-competition due to the twisties. The twisties refer to a mental block that causes a gymnast to lose their sense of space and orientation while in the air. When experiencing the twisties, gymnasts are at a severe risk of injuring themselves badly or even dying while performing difficult airborne skills.
America was shocked by Simone Biles’ withdrawal–some understanding the immense pressure and stress she was put under, while less empathetic fans bashed her reputation on social media. Biles was not the only one who faced significant challenges in the 2020 Olympic games and in the following years. Every member experienced immense setbacks such as serious kidney illness, stalkers, and varying mental game struggles.
Despite jarring adversities, each individual team member overcame their adversities and found a way to win the team gold in Paris 2024. Many people are wondering one thing: HOW? When asked about their emotions, cognitions, and overall mental state during (and leading up to) the long awaited competition, all of the athletes agree that being able to have fun led them to their success.
As competitive athletes, we often forget the importance of enjoying our sport. Having fun on your journey is a critical component of success. Without fun, athletes frequently miss out on their ability to get into the zone. Being in the zone occurs when an athlete has no other thoughts other than the task at hand. This level of flow is crucial for success in competitions. If you’re having fun while practicing and competing you forget about negative cognitions, immense pressure, and heavy expectations. Sport and competition really can be that simple if you are able to dedicate yourself to enjoying the process as well as the big moments.
Practicing gratitude is a great way to center yourself and dedicate your mind and body to enjoyment while honing your craft. Gratitude reminds us of how privileged we are to move our bodies and work to be the best we can at something we love. Take a note from the world champions, having fun is the best way to ensure your personal and team success.
