People often think of happiness as something that just is there, or isn’t. However, happiness requires awareness, and practice throughout the entirety of our lives. Here are some strategies to think about when looking for joy in your life.
What Does Happiness Look Like For You
Reflect and discover more about your happiness to find common patterns and areas for growth. By understanding why, when, where, and how you experience positive and negative affect you can more accurately choose the aspects of your mindset you would like to focus on.
Feel The Fear, Find It Funny Anyway
The power of laughter can’t be stated enough. If you are feeling unhappy, name the emotion and try to find light and laughter. Whether the laughter stems from comedic relief or something completely unrelated, let yourself laugh. Even better let yourself laugh with loved ones.
Unhappy Is Not A Dirty Word
Without unhappiness, you would never learn, or be able to problem-solve. Unhappiness is a critical aspect of human life that allows us to value and strive for joy. The best thing you can do is accept the unhappiness you feel so you can grow and learn to manage these feelings.
DON’T attach Self-Worth To A Goal
Goals are good. They give us motivation and purpose. Goals send our energy and efforts in the right direction, they shouldn’t measure our self-worth. Avoid attaching self-worth to the result of your journey. Happiness lives in the investment of personal progress as well as your evolution along the way.
Less “Me” Time
By actively caring and supporting others you will feel less anger, less social isolation, and a greater sense of purpose which will lead to a boost in happiness. Helping others leaves you feeling satisfied and proud of yourself. Focusing more on others is an easy trick that increases your happiness without even trying.
Chose Hope Over Blind Optimism
Hope is active and realistic whereas optimism is a prediction. Avoid grand illusions naming you as the superhero. Instead focus on small, tangible acts to improve your circumstances.
Love Is The Key
Happiness is Love. By seeking love you are also seeking happiness, and vice versa. Joy is found in the process and pursuit of the journey rather than aiming for 100% consistency or perfection. Place a focus on loving yourself, those around you, and your environment. This love will guide you toward happiness.
